An aluminium tub has been removed from a suburban house in Perth, Australia.
The removal came after a three-year battle to have the tub removed after a local resident complained about it causing mould growth.
The metal tub, made of plastic, was first spotted in September 2016 when it was found in a suburban Melbourne suburb.
It was removed from the property after the resident complained that the tub was affecting her asthma and that the area around the tub could get very warm in winter.
“The tub was originally installed on the property in September, but unfortunately it didn’t go up and down in the winter, so we did have mould growing around it,” resident Melissa McLean told news.com.au.
“We did notice it was getting warmer and warmer, so in January we put a plastic barrier over the tub to keep it from getting any warmer.”
It’s estimated that more than one-third of the world’s tubs are made of recycled plastic.
“It’s not uncommon for people to get in contact with these materials,” said Heather Richardson, from the recycling company Plastic Reuse.
“In Australia we use up to 50 per cent recycled material.”
The metal tube bar was originally removed from its home in May 2017.
“This was due to the condition of the tub being affected by the weather,” Richardson said.
“Since then, the council have taken it back and have done a proper inspection.”
We do not advise people to reuse tubs as it can cause mould and cause problems with water infiltration.
“The council also recommended that the metal tube bars be removed in the summer.
It’s unclear whether the council has ever removed the metal tub from its property.
It is not the first time metal tubs have been removed.
“However, this is the first we’ve heard of any problems related to this particular type of plastic.””
As a community, we are concerned about mould, so if you notice any issues with mould you can contact us on 13 11 20,” Richardson told news the council had received several complaints about the tubs.
